Observation Towers

CGC's interest in observation posts and towers can be seen in some of her earlier works. Drawings, objects, archival images and a slide presentations examine the tower's ambiguous nature. Simultaneously offensive and defensive, their form respond to a given function or ambition and must consider a knowledge of the "other" (defined as the threat or desired spectator). It is an ongoing project centered on the notion of collecting, collecting images of towers... both found and fabricated ones.

 

Since 2002 Cari Gonzalez-Casanova has made sculptures, drawings, photos, collected images and created slide shows relating to the architectural form of the observation tower... in this way she continues to enrich her own collection with her own imagined constructions.

Les postes d’observation et les miradors sont un sujet d’intérêt pour Cari Gonzalez-Casanova pour leur nature ambigu: à la fois offensif et défensif. Leur forme dépend de leur fonction, des ambitions qu’on leur prête et des connaissances acquises sur « l’autre » (qu’il soit une menace ou un spectateur qu’on cherche à attirer). Il y a dans cette section quelques-uns des projets sur les tours. Il s’agit de collectionner des images de tours mais aussi d’en créer. Depuis 2002 l’artiste a créé des sculptures, des dessins, des photos, un film en stop-motion et des diaporamas pour enrichir sa collection.
