The limits of the exhibition apparatus

Soft Power Manual (SPM) the anti-marketing kit is a participatory project inspired by the writings of Noam Chomsky and created for an exhibition about sabotage.

The invitation to create a new project touching on strategies of sabotage for an established cultural institution seemed like an oxymoron... a set-up that would surely cause all real actions of sabotage to implode, all ambition of political dissidence to be diluted in a solution of curatorial language (or censorship) and a recipe for failure (both for the exhibition and its stated premises and probably for the ensemble of the work of the artists).

SPM - The limits of the exhibition apparatus is the response to that invitation.

How to present an artist-initiated, socially and politically engaged project that employs strategies of sabotage in an institutional exhibition space housed in an art school? The project initiated by Cari GONZALEZ-CASANOVA that would ask this question is Soft Power Manual (SPM) the anti-marketing kit.

The exchanges between the curatorial body and CGC and the subsequent transformations that the presentation of the participatory project undergo as it is confronted with the limits of the exhibition apparatus make up the project SPM - The limits of the exhibition apparatus.

Soft Power Manual (SPM) the anti-marketing kit is a participatory project that addresses Chomsky's analysis of the communicative relationship between democracy and consumerism.

The anti-marketing kit includes:

  • anti-marketing stickers written by invited artists, poets and psychologists,

  • a manual which encourages users to place the stickers directly on store shelves/products and to document their action with a photo or video,

  • an internet platform to host the documentation of the actions using the stickers

  • and finally a Chomsky pin.
